The history of Manikaran Sahib is intertwined with the visits of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and the Hindu deity, Lord Shiva. According to Sikh tradition, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, along with his disciple Bhai Mardana, arrived here. Mardana was hungry, and there was no food. Guru Nanak sent him to collect food for langar. People donated flour, which Mardana started to cook, but he couldn't find fire. Guru Nanak asked him to lift a stone, and a hot spring appeared. The food sank when Mardana expressed doubt, but Guru Nanak asked him to pray, and the cooked food floated back up. Hindus believe that Lord Shiva and Parvati stayed here, and Parvati lost her Mani (jewel) which was then retrieved from the water, hence the name Manikaran. The hot springs are considered sacred and are said to have healing properties.
