The history of Koteshwar Mahadev Temple is steeped in mythology. It is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva appeared before Ravana, who was performing penance. According to legend, Ravana was granted a boon of a Shiva lingam, but due to his arrogance, he dropped it. The lingam multiplied into thousands, and Ravana could not distinguish the original. The original lingam is said to be the one now housed in the Koteshwar Temple. The current structure is believed to have been built centuries ago, with renovations and additions over time. The temple's location at the edge of the land adds to its mystical allure.
