The history of Palitana dates back to the 11th century when the first temples were built. Construction and renovation continued over several centuries, with contributions from various Jain merchants and rulers. The temples are divided into different tuks (sections), each managed by a different trust. Legend says that the hills were sanctified when Rishabhanatha, the first Tirthankara, visited and meditated there. While the exact origins are debated, inscriptions suggest significant temple activity from the 11th century onwards. The site has faced periods of destruction and restoration, reflecting the turbulent history of the region. Today, Palitana stands as a testament to the enduring faith and architectural prowess of the Jain community.
