The Naida Caves are believed to have originated as laterite mines during the Portuguese colonial period. The Portuguese, along with other colonial powers, extracted laterite for construction purposes. This quarrying activity inadvertently created the network of caves and unique rock formations seen today. Over time, natural weathering and erosion further shaped the caves, adding to their intricate beauty. While primarily mines, some speculate that the caves may have provided refuge or shelter in earlier times, though concrete evidence is lacking.
