The Buddha Vihara at Sirpur dates back to the 7th-8th century AD, a period when Sirpur was a major center of Buddhism. The site was a part of the ancient Dakshina Kosala kingdom. It flourished under the patronage of the Somavamshi kings. The Vihara served as a residential and educational center for Buddhist monks. Excavations have revealed numerous artifacts, including sculptures, pottery, and seals, offering valuable insights into the religious and cultural practices of the time. The site provides critical evidence of the spread of Buddhism in central India.
