The Rock Garden was secretly started by Nek Chand Saini, a government employee, in 1957. He began collecting waste materials from demolition sites and industrial areas around Chandigarh and, in his spare time, transformed them into sculptures. For nearly two decades, he worked secretly in a ravine outside the city, creating his artistic haven. The garden was discovered by authorities in 1975, and instead of demolishing it, they recognized its artistic value and provided Nek Chand with support and a team of laborers to further develop the garden. It was officially opened to the public in 1976 and has since become one of Chandigarh's most popular tourist attractions.
