    History

The area that is now the Valmiki Tiger Reserve has a long history of being a natural forest. It was officially declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1978, and later upgraded to a tiger reserve in 1990 under Project Tiger. The reserve is named after the great sage Valmiki, believed to have written the epic Ramayana in the nearby region. Its establishment aimed to protect the region's biodiversity and the Bengal tiger population, which was under threat. Over the years, the reserve has become a significant conservation area, attracting tourists and researchers alike, contributing to the region's ecological and economic development.
