    History

Urgelling Monastery was founded in 1489 by Lama Urgyen Sangpo, a disciple of the renowned Tibetan Buddhist master, Tsongkhapa. It played a crucial role in the spread of Gelugpa Buddhism in the region. The monastery gained prominence as the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama in 1683. While tragically destroyed by a fire in 1837, it was later rebuilt. Today, it stands as a testament to its enduring legacy and continues to be an important center for Buddhist learning and practice.
