Initially a Hinayana center, it later embraced Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism, evident in the variety of sculptures and architectural styles. The site flourished under the patronage of the Eastern Chalukyas and other local rulers. It was a prominent monastic complex and a center for Buddhist learning. Over time, it was abandoned and forgotten, only to be rediscovered in the early 20th century. Excavations have revealed a wealth of artifacts, providing valuable insights into the region's Buddhist heritage.
