Ghantasala's history is deeply intertwined with Buddhism. The site flourished as a significant Buddhist center during the Satavahana and Ikshvaku dynasties. Archaeological excavations have unearthed stupas, chaityas, and sculptures, revealing the presence of a large monastic complex. The Amaravati School of Art is evident in the discovered artifacts, showcasing the region's artistic prowess. The site gradually declined after the fall of these dynasties but remains a testament to the area's rich Buddhist past. The village's name is believed to have derived from 'Ghanta-shala' (house of bells), possibly referring to the bells associated with the Buddhist monasteries.
