Kanjli Wetland was created in 1870 by constructing the headworks across the Bein River, a tributary of the Beas River. The primary purpose was to provide irrigation to the surrounding agricultural lands. Over time, the area transformed into a rich wetland ecosystem, attracting a diverse range of flora and fauna. Recognizing its ecological significance, Kanjli Wetland was declared a Ramsar site in 2002, acknowledging its importance as a wetland of international importance. This recognition has led to increased conservation efforts to protect and preserve the wetland's biodiversity and ecological integrity. Today, it serves as both an irrigation source and a vital habitat for numerous species.
